Sustainability

The most sustainable piece of jewellery is the one you keep wearing. That’s where our choices start: materials built to last, a factory we can stand behind, and a 2-year warranty on every piece.

The most sustainable piece of jewellery is the one you never have to replace. So durability is not a feature we added at the end. It is the first question every design has to answer: will this survive your lifestyle?

That is why we build on 316L stainless steel, finish it in PVD gold, and wear-test each design through showers, sea swims and training sessions before it goes on sale. A piece that lasts years instead of months means fewer replacements, less new material and less waste.

Our stainless steel and gold are both recycled. Steel can be melted down and remade again and again without its properties changing, and recycled gold is chemically identical to newly mined gold.

Choosing recycled means working with metal that’s already in circulation. Your piece doesn’t add to the demand for newly mined gold, while recycling takes far less energy than mining it fresh. And pretty cool, right? The metal you wear has had a life before this one.

Our pieces are made in a factory certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), the standards organisation for the jewellery and watch industry. To earn that certification, the factory is audited by an independent third party against the RJC Code of Practices, which sets requirements for human rights, labour conditions, pay and working hours, health and safety, business ethics and environmental management.

It is worth being precise about what this covers. RJC certification is about how and where our jewellery is made: the people doing the work and the conditions they do it in. It is not a certificate for the materials themselves. What goes into each piece is set out in the Materials section.

We’re setting up a fund to give back to the communities our materials and craft come from. Our aim: 1% of every sale, before costs, to organisations that protect the environment and support women.

The rest is still taking shape: who we partner with, how often we give, and who decides. We could have waited until it was finished. We’d rather tell you now, so you can hold us to it. As it comes together, we’ll share who we chose and why, and keep a running total here of what we’ve given.

What we’re working on next

Anne Thaléa is still young, and we’re learning along the way. There's definitely more we want to do. Next on our list is a fully traceable supply chain, starting with our stones. Our pieces are made in an RJC-certified factory, and our steel and gold are recycled. Where our stones originally come from is the part we’re still working on, as they reach us through local suppliers. We’ll keep you posted here.

Got ideas on how we could be more sustainable? Tell us. It’s Tabitha or Izabela reading, and we reply within 24–48 hours.
